I love the outdoors, but my bookworm daughter doesn’t. I took her to a national park to explore the thrills of nature

After exiting our plane at the Jackson Hole airport, I slowly walked the tarmac in awe. Wyoming’s powder-capped Grand Tetons encircled us so closely, I felt as if I could touch their sparkly snow. I snapped photos of the breathtaking backdrop as my 14-year-old daughter, Fiona, rolled her eyes. “Come on, let’s go inside,” she urged, seemingly unimpressed, even though she’d landed at the only commercial airport in a U.S. national park for the first time.

We were embarking on this mother-daughter trip to tackle outdoor adventures. Leaving her father and brother at home, we planned to go whitewater rafting on Snake River and tour Grand Teton National Park, both activities led by bold women guides. My hope was to spark an admiration for the outdoors in my daughter. While I feel most alive in the fresh air, Fiona would much rather be indoors, reading, writing or playing piano.
